PIRÁMIDES DE GÜÍMAR ADDRESSES CLIMATE CHANGE FROM VARIOUS PERSPECTIVES

Our environmental commitment

Eco-responsible actions: because a "greener world" is possible.

Pirámides de Güímar has been developing sustainability projects since 2009, receiving its first nomination in 2011 for the European Museum of the Year Award. In 2013 it signed a collaboration agreement with the University of La Laguna to develop ‘Environmental Education for Sustainability’ projects and since 2021 it has been part of the Climate Heritage Network. Our dedication to sustainability and the environment is reflected in each of our initiatives and projects.

Botanical Garden

In May 2017, the Ibero-Macaronesian Association of Botanical Gardens (AIMJB) distinguished the Ethnographic Park Pirámides de Güímar with the classification of Botanical Garden. The plant collections, available for consultation, visit and recognition, undoubtedly meet the scientific objectives of Conservation, Education, Research and Dissemination.

The Pirámides de Güímar Botanical Garden is a member of the Alliance of Botanical Gardens against Climate Change, addressing the climate crisis through:

  • Collections of local plants, adapted to the environment and with little water demands.
  • Efficient irrigation systems to save water.
  • The incorporation of ecological fertilizers.
  • Dissemination and awareness.

Sustainable Garden

This green space is part of a collaboration agreement with the University of La Laguna on projects for ‘Environmental Education for Sustainability.’ Spanning 1,500 m², it recreates a typical Canarian ravine. The success of the Sustainable Garden lies in its fulfillment of the three pillars of sustainability: environmental, economic, and social. This model demonstrates how to create sustainable gardens in the Canary Islands.

For this environmental project, Pirámides de Güímar received its second nomination for the European Museum of the Year Award in 2017, and the ‘Best General Sustainable Practice 2021’ award granted by Turismo de Tenerife in its annual Sustainable Tourism Practices competition. This garden is not only an example of sustainability but also an educational resource that teaches visitors about the importance of preserving our natural environment.

REDBAG

Seeds for exchange with the Botanic Gardens of the REDBAG.

Since 2020, the Pirámides de Güímar Botanical Garden has been part of REDBAG, the Spanish Seed Bank Network. This participation enables networking among genetic and biological material banks through information exchange and coordination mechanisms between botanical gardens. This network is essential for the conservation of biodiversity and the sharing of knowledge about endemic, native, and exotic flora. Thanks to REDBAG, we can contribute to the protection and preservation of plant species and safeguard genetic diversity.

An Ocean … of Plastic

This interactive exhibition is the result of the ongoing sustainability program developed by the Ethnographic Park over the years. It represents the first permanent exhibition in Spain addressing ocean pollution caused by plastics. The exhibit clearly and directly highlights the current issues our seas face due to plastic waste. Through this exhibition, we aim to educate and raise awareness among visitors about the urgent need to reduce plastic use and protect our oceans. The exhibition includes information on the devastating effects of plastic on marine life and presents practical solutions we can all adopt to reduce our plastic footprint.
